Fields of Study

Program Overview - The Ph.D. degree at Southeastern is an advanced academic research degree in the major fields of Biblical studies, theological studies or applied theology. The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of three academic years (six semesters) to complete. The program requires a two-year residency (four semesters) prior to the dissertation stage. One full year is assumed as a minimum for post-residence dissertation work.
Biblical Studies - Students who work in the field of Biblical studies may choose to concentrate in Old Testament or New Testament. They may also choose one of the cross-area concentrations*: Biblical theology, hermeneutics or women's studies. In each of these concentrations, two series of seminars are regularly offered that emphasize historical and modern theological issues and topics in biblical research.
Theological Studies - Students who choose the field of theological studies may select a concentration in systematic theology, philosophy of religion, Christian ethics or church history. They may also choose one of the cross-area concentrations*: Biblical theology, hermeneutics, or women's studies. In each of these concentrations, several seminars are regularly offered.
Applied Theology - Southeastern provides concentrations in the field of applied theology to train people for effective leadership and participation in a wide range of ministry areas, furthering the mission of the church in our society and world. Students who choose a concentration in this field focus on the skills needed for effective preaching, evangelism and Christian missions.
*Cross-area concentrations meet the needs for cross-disciplinary competencies and provides a program that allows students to study in more than one field.
