Welcome to the website of the Office of Ph.D. Studies at SEBTS. We are grateful for your interest in the program. Southeastern’s Doctor of Philosophy degree provides a graduate-level academic research program for highly qualified students who wish to pursue advanced studies in the major fields covered in the Master of Divinity program. Admission is competitive.
Our Lord regarded the Shema as the first and greatest commandment of the Law. When he expounded this commandment, he insisted that it entailed loving God “with all your mind”(Mark 12:30). This demonstrates that Christians must not neglect the intellectual life, but must devote all of their intellectual resources to the service of their God.
Christian scholarship should be of the highest quality. Excellence in scholarship is necessary because Christians are motivated by a desire to glorify God. The Scriptures command: “Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. . . . Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord--you serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:17,23). Excellence in Christian scholarship is possible because the humble and prayerful Christian scholar is aided and empowered by God in his labors so that he exceeds his own personal limitations (Ephesians 3:20; 1 Corinthians 1:24-25; 2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
