Today Union University in Jackson, Tennessee announced Nathan A. Finn as the new dean of The School of Theology and Missions.

Finn is currently the director of the Center for Spiritual Formation and Evangelical Spirituality and associate professor of Historical Theology and Spiritual Formation at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS).

He will begin his new role at Union on July 1, the role previously held by Greg Thornbury, president of The King’s College in New York.

Finn is a two-time graduate of SEBTS, completing his Master of Divinity in 2005 and Doctor of Philosophy in 2007. Since 2006, Finn taught courses in Church history, Baptist history and historical theology.

Daniel Akin, president of Southeastern, describes Finn’s departure as bittersweet. “This is a huge loss for Southeastern Seminary but a tremendous gain for Union University,” Akin said.

Bruce Ashford, provost of Southeastern, said, “Dr. Finn is a wonderful human being and an extraordinary scholar and leader. We pray God’s blessings for him and Union University. I look forward to seeing what unfolds under his leadership at that great university.”

Finn is known on the SEBTS campus as a beloved professor. In 2014, he shared how his classroom is a Great Commission classroom.

“The history of Christianity is the history of all sorts of interconnected themes, one of which is the spread of the church,” he said. “I like to tell the story of how the church has always strived to be a family of people from every tribe, tongue and nation. In every lecture, I try to apply the insights of church history to personal godliness and missional living.”
