The Jesse David Hendley Foundation announced a generous gift to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) for an endowed Chair of Biblical Theology. The namesake of the chair is Doctor Jesse Hendley.

A presentation of the gift took place at the Southeastern Theological Fellowship dinner held at The Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Md. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

An endowed chair is a strategic gift because it provides an enduring source of funding for professors – the backbone of a world-class program of Great Commission preparation.

Daniel Palmer, director of Financial Development at SEBTS, said: “The Hendley Chair represents the third, fully-funded chair given to Southeastern over the last nine months. History will remember this season of blessing as seminal in the life of this Great Commission seminary and profound in its everlasting impact.”

Following Hendley’s example, his son, leading the Hendley Foundation, was interested in the cause of theological education, and in particular, pre-millennial and Conservative Evangelical teaching and preaching. Hendley, himself, was a pastor, evangelist, Bible teacher, radio host, minister, author and student of New Testament Greek.

He was from Atlanta, Ga. and received his education from Georgia Tech, Columbia Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Hendley pastored Colonial Hills Baptist Church in East Point, Ga. for 14 years.

Hendley is best remembered as one of Southern Baptist’s most remarkable evangelists, and he hosted “The Radio Evangelistic Hour,” which began in 1931 and continued until his death at the age of 87 on Nov. 30, 1994.

“We celebrate these chairs today because we know we will celebrate their fruit forever,” Palmer said. “We praise God for men and women who are giving so generously and strategically for the Kingdom’s advance.”
