As new students arrived at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the College at Southeastern the campus became filled with a buzz of energy, laughter, and a fresh passion for Jesus. Incoming students were encouraged to meet their new professors, serve the local community, engage in team building exercises, and take a moment to relax by Falls Lake before embarking on their first semester of classes.

Dr. Akin, the president of Southeastern, gave a charge to new students and spoke about the joy he finds in serving at the seminary and a selection of his favorite scripture verses. He challenged the students to be committed to daily devotions with the Lord, approach classes with an eagerness to learn and be passionate about the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

Provost Ashford encouraged students to be faithful to the call God has on their life and to seek excellence in their work. He reinforced the core competencies of the seminary and focused on academic studies an act of worship.

Dr. Lawless, dean of students at Southeastern, stressed the importance of exemplifying humility, service and grace while studying and being prepared to take on the enemy to make hell shake.

The service day was a Welcome Week highlight for the students as they volunteered in the community. Elizabeth Pugh, an incoming freshman at the College at Southeastern, said: “Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity gave us the ability to build relationships while we painted shutters and railings. It was a powerful experience as the homeowner we served shared her personal story about battling breast cancer.”

Orientation was held from Aug. 9 through Aug. 16 with classes beginning on Aug. 19. The events took place throughout the Southeastern campus and in the surrounding community.

Staci Byrd, a resident assistant in Lolley Hall said: “As I look to this fall, I hope to facilitate and build community while discipling girls towards spiritual growth.”

After a week of worship, prayer and extensive orientation training, the new students are energized and equipped for a semester of scholarship and application in their pursuit to glorify King Jesus.
