Retired Long-Time Southeastern Employee Dies at 88
January 19, 2017
“Evelyn Carter was the quintessential Christian servant,” Daniel Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, said in light of her passing.
Evelyn Barham Carter, a North Carolina native, died at the age of 88 on Saturday, July 4, 2015.
In a 2011 interview, Carter shared about her time at Southeastern. “The Lord Jesus Christ has blessed me in so many ways with his love, guidance, good health and strength to fulfill my goal and work for fifty years at Southeastern, a place that is dear to my heart,” she said. “To God be the glory, great things he has done!”
Carter served as a faculty secretary at SEBTS from 1961 to 2013. She worked with all five presidents of Southeastern and held offices in every building on campus other than Stephens-Mackie Hall.
“Evelyn graced Southeastern Seminary for more than 50 years with her love, charm and grace,” Akin said. “I never heard an unkind remark from her nor did I ever observe an unkind act. She always represented beautifully the Jesus she loved and worshiped.
“We thank God for allowing us to enjoy her these many years even as we look forward to being with our sweet sister for all of eternity in heaven,” Akin added.
Her funeral will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Wake Forest Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
