Southeastern is Well Represented at the 65th Annual Evangelical Theological Society Meeting

This year, thirteen representatives from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) in Wake Forest, N.C. presented academic papers or participated in a panel discussion at the 65th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS).
ETS was founded in 1949 and is made up of students, teachers, pastors, scholars and others passionate about the research and thought in the area of theology.
Andreas Köstenberger, senior research professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology at SEBTS, edits the “Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society” (JETS). JETS is published quarterly and focuses on biblical and theological research.
The event was held in Baltimore, Md. from Nov. 19-21 with a large number of attendees and participants. This year the theme of the meeting was “Evangelicalism, Inerrancy, and the Evangelical Theological Society: Retrospect and Prospect.”
A highlight of the meeting was the first Southeastern Theological Fellowship. “We were very grateful for the way things went at the Southeastern Theological Fellowship (STF),” SEBTS Provost Bruce Ashford said. “The STF is a fellowship designed to facilitate scholarly conversations and friendships across the evangelical spectrum, with the recognition that the task of theology is best done in community.
“Over 100 people attended the STF dinner, with over half of them being guests from sister colleges, universities, and seminaries,” Ashford said. “We were happy to honor four scholars for their significant contributions to evangelical scholarship in recent years. Those scholars were Dr. Christopher Morgan (California Baptist University), Dr. Alan Bandy (Oklahoma Baptist University), Dr. Paul Copan (Palm Beach Atlantic University) and Dr. Tom Schreiner (Southern Baptist Theological Seminary). Dr. Schreiner closed the banquet by providing a brief message on “Doing Theology for the Church,”
Jonathan Six, director of Alumni Development at SEBTS said, “We sought to host an event that would give us the opportunity to recognize excellence in scholarship and to continue to build relationships with our alumni and friends who serve the academy so well. The STF was a perfect opportunity to do so.
“We hope in the years to come that we will be able to continue to recognize those who serve King Jesus in this vocation,” Six said.
Two doctoral students at SEBTS presented papers at ETS, Abidan Paul Shah and Andrew J. Spencer. The SEBTS faculty had 10 paper presenters including: Daniel Akin, Jamie Dew, Nathan Finn, Ant Greenham, John Hammett, Daniel Heimbach, Ken Keathley, Benjamin Merkle, Mark Rooker and Greg Welty.
