Miles hopes to make a lasting impact on her students. “On an academic level, I would like to be able to help students appreciate literature and value good writing and speaking skills,” she said. “On a broader level, I desire to see students grow in their faith and love of God as they matriculate through college and grow in their ability and desire to share their love of Christ with others.”

Bruce Ashford, provost of Southeastern, said, “Dr. Miles is the perfect fit for Southeastern. In addition to her credentials as a professor of English and Linguistics and her proven track record as a classroom instructor, she is known for her warm personality and popularity with students.”

Miles believes that literature, writing, communication and linguistic courses provide training to clearly communicate the Great Commission.

“As Christians it is important for us to be able to communicate well in both spoken and written forms,” Miles emphasized. “It is important to connect with people through books or movies so that such connections can lead to gospel-oriented conversations.”

Miles’s academic background includes English literature and sociolinguistic research at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. As part of the North Carolina Language and Life Project, Miles studied and documented the dialect on Harker’s Island, North Carolina. She continued her academic studies at the University of Texas at Austin where she shifted her focus to sign linguistics and studied sign language acquisition in deaf families. She also researched phonetic and phonological properties in adult signing.

“We are thrilled that Adrianne Miles has accepted an offer to join the Southeastern faculty,” Ashford said. “She is exceptionally well-qualified, having earned a B. A. and an M. A. in English from the North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas (Austin).”

Miles is married to Scott Miles for eighteen years and they have two sons, Zac (13) and Jake (11). Her family has been members of North Wake Church in Wake Forest since 2002. Miles and her husband serve as small group leaders and work with the youth group.

Her family is involved in community and school sports activities. They also enjoy hiking and camping together.

Miles is looking forward to working with the Southeastern students. “I already know from my adjunct work that I will be working with a great group of students,” she said. “I am looking forward to more interactions with students since I will be on campus more, and I am also looking forward to getting to know the faculty better.”
