Beyond the Book with Dr. Echevarría: “God’s Presence with Us and in Us”

What role does the Holy Spirit play not just in the New Testament but throughout all of Scripture? In his recent publication, “God’s Presence with Us and in Us: A Biblical Theology of the Holy Spirit,” Miguel Echevarría presents a comprehensive view of the Holy Spirit’s presence throughout the biblical story and among God’s people. This book is the 12th contribution to the series “Essential Studies in Biblical Theology” (ESBT).
At Southeastern Seminary, Echevarría serves as associate professor of New Testament and Greek. In the following Q&A he takes some time to share more about this new publication.
What motivated you to write “God’s Presence with Us and in Us?”
When I was approached with the opportunity to contribute in the ESBT series, I offered to write a volume on the Holy Spirit. For years, I had thought about the ubiquity of the Spirit in the Bible. Yet, I was disappointed with how often the conversation almost solely focuses on spiritual gifts. I wanted to write a volume on the Spirit that reflected the all-encompassing work of the Spirit from Genesis to Revelation, from creation to new creation. Gratefully, I did!
Who is the audience, and how do you hope they will use this text?
I hope that students and ministers will benefit from my work on the Spirit in the Bible. I hope they read it for themselves and use it in their classrooms and churches. Each chapter concludes with discussion questions, so I think it would also be helpful for small group study. I also think it would make for a great Valentines gift. What communicates love more than a book about the Holy Spirit?
How does this book uniquely contribute to the study of the Holy Spirit?
My work is unique in that I try to show that the same Spirit that was present to bring about the original creation is also at work to remake God’s people into spiritual temples who will one day spread the presence of God throughout the New Jerusalem of a new creation. Along the way, he indwells and empowers all new covenant believers, not just a select few like under the old covenant, to serve God and his people.

What are some common misunderstandings people tend to have about the work and role of the Holy Spirit?
I think many evangelical Christians just don’t understand the Spirit, mainly because they have not taken the time to study his role in Scripture. As a result, they overlook the pervasive presence of the Spirit throughout the Bible, that he is present before the creation, that he is present with Israel in the exodus journey and in the tabernacle and temple, and that he is present in us now, empowering us to serve as his witnesses as we await our resurrection into a new creation. He most certainly distributes and empowers our use of spiritual gifts for the edification of the body, but he does so much more! I hope my book gives people a more robust understanding of the Spirit!
As believers, how should our theology of the Spirit shape our witness and the way we live our day-to-day lives?
Our theology of the Spirit should lead us to rely on the indwelling Spirit of God to enable us to persevere through the present life and to empower our gospel witness. And as we endure the sufferings of the present life, we can trust that the Spirit is always with us. The presence of the Spirit in our lives really is the fulfillment of God being with us forever. That should comfort every Christian.
How has God challenged or encouraged you throughout the process of writing this book?
Personally, I am more encouraged than ever that God will never leave me nor forsake me. He is in me now, and he promises to be with me forever when he returns. This keeps me going when I struggle with the trials of my present life. I hope this truth does the same for readers.
